This workshop introduces educators to the strengths and challenges facing their Micronesian students and families. Participants are introduced to the history of the Compacts of Free Association (COFA) and the impact of these agreements on the migration of people from The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and Palau to Hawaiʻi. Participants discuss typical cultural practices, gender and family roles, and expectations of and about education to help educators better understand the challenges facing their Micronesian students and families. Discussion is followed by a question-and-answer period.
